Script to convert calendars from Plan to KOrganizer
December 11, 2000: Bert Bos has written a Perl script to convert calendar files from Plan format to vCalendar format for import into KOrganizer. You can get the script plan2vcs from the author's webpage.
Update of development tasks
November 19, 2000: The list of development tasks has been updated. There are new things like the project view, some tasks were completed and have been removed and the priorities were readjusted. The most important change is that group scheduling has a much higher priority now.
KOrganizer 2.0 has been released
October 24, 2000: After a long freeze and beta phase KOrganizer 2.0 has finally been released. This should be the most complete and most stable KOrganizer ever. If you still use KOrganizer 1.x, don't hesitate to upgrade. If you haven't used KOrganizer before, give it a try.
KOrganizer 2.0 is becoming reality
October 1, 2000: As the latest relase schedule says, KDE 2.0 will be released on Monday 16 October 2000 and KOrganizer 2.0 is part of this release. Read now what KOrganizer 2.0 will bring to your desktop.
KOrganizer 1.91 has been released
June 16, 2000: The first public beta of KOrganizer 2 has been released as part of Kleopatra, the second public beta of KDE 2. There are a lot of improvements compared to the last KOrganizer release, some of them listed below:
- Full integration in KDE 2 framework
- Improved Todo-View (hierarchical todos, drag and drop, ...)
- Web Page Export
- Improved Agenda View (colored events, parallel events, ...)
- Many, many other improvements and bug fixes
Please give this new KOrganizer version a try and report any bugs you encounter. This will help making the release 2.0 of KOrganizer as stable and complete as you can wish.
You will need Qt 2.1.1 and the KDE 1.91 libraries in order to install KOrganizer 1.91. KOrganizer is included in the package kdepim. All of these you can get from the KDE FTP-Server. Have a look at the KDE web site for more information about KDE and install instructions.
First Beta of KOrganizer 2.0 in sight
May 14, 2000: As defined in the KDE 2 release schedule, the next release (KDE 1.91, code-named "Kleopatra") will contain all KDE packages including KOrganizer. The release is scheduled for the beginning of June and the code is frozen on June 6th for this release.
And as always, since this is open-source, any help is welcome, be it coding, bug fixing, testing, documenting, translating or whatever. If you are interested, contact me.
KOrganizer is becoming a KPart
Apr 30, 2000: As most of you may know, one of the key features of the upcoming KDE 2 is its component technology called KParts. This allows to embed programs as components into other programs, for example a KWord document can contain a KSpread table, or the KDE 2 web browser Konqueror embeds viewer for postscript and other file formats.
The component framework, KDE 2 provides, is extremely easy to use, so I took an afternnoon and converted KOrganizer into a KPart. This means that besides running KOrganizer as stand-alone application you can now also view calendars directly in Konqueror. It also opens a lot of new perspectives for KOrganizer, one of them being the integration in an Personal-Information-Management application covering e-mail, appointments and other personal data.
Up to now the KPart feature is only in the development version of KOrganizer, but it will released to the public with KDE 2.
List of KOrganizer Development Tasks is online
Mar 3, 2000: Although KOrganizer is already a useful program, there could be a some more features, and some of them have been requested by users quite often. I have set up a list of KOrganizer Development Tasks collecting the things that need work in the near and longer-term future. That should help developers to coordinate their efforts. If you would like to take over a task, that would be great.
This list was directly created from a KOrganizer To-Do list by a new feature, the Web Page Export, which you will find in the next KOrganizer release. The underlying file in vCalendar format is also available. Tell me if you use it, then I will make sure that it is up to date.
We are heading for KDE 2
Feb 18, 2000: Now that the relase of KDE 2 comes in sight (no, I will not give you a date), we are also preparing KOrganizer to be part of this release. KOrganizer 2 will be KDE 2 compliant, will have new features like an improved To-Do list and a cleaned up user interface.
Although much work has been done there is still a lot of left. That's your chance. Become part of the exciting world of KDE development. If you have some experience with C++ and are interested in contributing to KOrganizer in one or the other way, please get in contact with me, so we can work out the details. Possible areas of interest include but are not limited to:
- Making KOrganizer a KDE 2 component (KPart), embeddable for example in Konqueror, the KDE 2 "web and everything else"-browser.
- Make more use of the nice widgets available in the new KDE and Qt libraries, like the standard dialog base or the about dialog.
- Improve group scheduling for network-wide coordination of meetings, appointments and other events. The underlying standards exist. KOrganizer only has to be extended to make use of them. By using vCalendar as storage format a big part of the distance already is covered.
- The everyday task of fixing bugs, perhaps the most important task.
KOrganizer has a new maintainer
Feb 2, 2000: Due to lack of time Preston Brown has passed on the job of maintaining KOrganizer to me, Cornelius Schumacher. I will try to pursue it in the same spirit and with the same quality. Let's make KOrganizer an even better product than it is now!
Call For Developers!
I have asked for help with KOrganizer in the past, and I have received it at various times. However, my free time is becoming more frequently occupied by different pursuits than KOrganizer. While I want to continue working on KOrganizer long into the future, it would be very beneficial if I could get some assistance in implementing the remaining features and fixing bugs. If you are interested, please drop me a note. You must be familiar with C++ coding, and knowledge of KDE/Qt would be nice, although not absolutely required.
KOrganizer 1.1 has been released!
Feb 7, 1999: After a long feature freeze, KOrganizer 1.1 has been released. This is a stable release, where we have spent the last month only working on fixing bugs, and not adding any new earth-shattering features. PLEASE NOTE: the "internal" version of the software when you look at the "about" dialog box will say KOrganizer 1.0. Originally, I had intended this to be the 1.0 release, not the 1.1 release. However, because the software was included in the KDE 1.1 release, it was marked as such. KOrganizer 1.1 and 1.0 are the same thing. I will make sure that in the future such confusion does not happen.
KOrganizer 0.9.18 has been released!
December 9, 1998: This release is important for a number of reasons:
- First of all, a number of important bugs in 0.9.17 have been corrected.
- Second, this is going to be the last release of KOrganizer directed specifically at KDE 1.0. All further development will be targeted towards KDE 1.1, which will be released very shortly. I will be adding a number of features (including address book support) to KOrganizer which cannot be adequately or properly addressed with KDE 1.0.
- Last, it is significant because I have about two weeks to flog the rest of the major bugs that people find out of KOrganizer. When this is done, KOrganizer 1.0 will be released, barring unforseen circumstances, and work on the next generation of KOrganizer will begin.
The list of major changes and new features includes:
- DRAG AND DROP between the day/week views and the small calendar.
- More complete drag and drop support to follow.
- Fixed bugs which caused crashes in Options Dialog
- Much improved about dialog. :)
- Use KProcess for print preview
- automatic scrolling support when dragging events
- rewrote the event widget, looks much better and works with qt > 1.40
- bugfixes when reading/writing recurrence rules in vCalendar format
- lots of other reported bugs have been fixed
KOrganizer 0.9.17 has been released!
November 20, 1998: Changes and new features:
- Translation updates + new polish translation
- Holiday updates + some new countries
- Extra time zone offsets added (for australia in particular).
- Full Monday Week support added to day/week view.
- Font support in todo list and month view.
- Some small printing updates (thanks for the contributions).
- Month View has gained a number of usability improvements.
- Color options
- More or less all the bugs I've received in the past 3 weeks are fixed. And believe me, there were lots of them.
KOrganizer 0.9.16 has been released!
October 30, 1998: This is mainly a bugfix release for a number of important bugs, especially in regards to recurrence, which cropped up in the '.15 release. I apologize for the short release time between the two versions.
KOrganizer 0.9.15 has been released!
October 27, 1998: Here's an overview of the major changes and new features:
- Holiday support! Check out this new option in the Options Dialog. Right now, they are only visible in the month view, but that will change.
- Completely updated and revised manual. It is much more complete.
- Updated debian stuff
- Fixes for segfaults on startup. People who had problems with .14 shouldn't experience them with this release.
- "Monday Week" support. This means that the date navigator and month view will display a week as starting on Monday, instead of Sunday. Credit for this code belongs to Roman Rohr.
- Quite a few other bugfixes and small additions. See ChangeLog for complete details.
